12 Days of 3DS-mas Day 10: Game Review: Gunman Clive

Game: Shooter Clive
Console: Nintendo 3DS
Developer: Horberg Productions
Date of publication: January 3, 2013

Gunman Clive is an excellent but somewhat short-lived platformer reminiscent of Namco's Rolling Thunder. Players go through 16 levels, taking turns with bosses, dodging and dodging enemy shots. Between the classic running and gun action, there are platforming reminiscent of Super Mario World and nods to other games that move almost like a straight minecart level from Donkey Kong Country. The gameplay and controls are tight and work well, allowing players to learn a bit in each level before finally moving on.

Players can choose between two characters, with a third unlocked after beating the game. There are minor gameplay differences between the characters, but nothing major. Power-ups are also an important part of the game, with triple shots, controlled shots, and other perks that change the strategy needed to complete levels. Players have a life counter that depends on the overall difficulty of the game; The easier the level, the more hits Clive can deliver.

Graphically, the game is presented in an old Western hand-drawn style with excellent animations and effects. The music featured in the game is oddly contemporary, but never cheap, suitably cowboy. The bosses are quite varied and provide a nice gameplay transition between platforming sections.

Overall, Gunman Clive is an impressive little game and one of the best on the Nintendo eShop. While the length reduces replayability, the presentation and gameplay quality, along with the low price, make it an attractive purchase, especially if players are familiar with other run-and-gun games like Rolling Thunder.
