Beyond: Two Souls is one of the strangest games I've ever played for many reasons. I know what to expect from the David Cage and Quantic Dream games; Cinematic elements, QTEs, and some weird plot elements and twists towards the end of the game. However, I was still amazed at how little gameplay and choice there was, and how little emotion I put into Jody, the game's protagonist, and events in general. The game's timeline is similar to the Tarantino movie timeline, jumping around all over the place but for no particular reason.
The game begins with Jody chasing and destroying a small town police station while a SWAT team tries to surround her. With the help of Aiden, his friend in the spirit realm who never leaves him, he manages to escape and we start his life over again, growing with some kind of strange power (which is really just Aiden's doing). Players can control Jody and Aiden at various points in the game, and often the action can only progress if Aiden does something funny to fix the problem.
In most cases, the range of actions made available to the player is small and has little impact on the overall storyline. Like when Jody decides to run away for the night and ends up in a bar on the outskirts of town. Depending on what the player is doing, they can either stay or leave, with the former making them feel a little awkward as they simply walk out of the bar after feeling uncomfortable. However, the following chapters do not depend on the choice made, and this also applies to some other important decisions made by the players. Dialogue options also seem to follow this rule; While that usually sounds like a lot, the answers are often very similar regardless of the player's choice.
The story itself is rooted in science fiction, with large time gaps that aren't explained by the parts of the story we see. While it's safe to say that Jodie experiences several notable events throughout the game, it's not entirely clear if her character was shaped by what happened to her, and the lack of an actual narrative is masked by constant time jumps. There were a few key emotional moments in the game, but the confusion and apathy meant I felt next to nothing for Jodie at the time those moments came.
Graphically, the game is impressive, with some of the best facial detail on the Playstation 3, well-designed environments and special effects, and cinematic dialogue sequences. If there's one thing this game stands out for, it's that it looks almost as good as the movie; The characters are visually realistic, and while the locations are less detailed than in real life, it's a good experience. The voice output is also very high quality, clips for all occasions sound natural and well voiced.
All in all, it's easy to see what Beyond: Two Souls is trying to do as the next Quantic Dream product after Heavy Rain. Over-reliance on Aiden's help, choices that don't work, and poor storytelling prevent the game from reaching its full potential. There seems to be only one true ending other than 5 options. After going through all of them, it becomes clear that 4 of them were added as failed attempts to enter the game. I enjoyed some parts of the experience, but most of the gameplay was boring, predictable or predictable in the end no matter what choice I made.
