I've been waiting a while to review Sonic The Hedgehog; Partly because it's a very popular video game and I want to give it the attention and care it deserves, but also because reaching the end can be very frustrating and the 3DS re-release of M2 has a level select option to avoid removing any stupidity. Glitch After playing the original Mega Drive and 3DS versions, not much has changed in the remastered version except for the 3D effects (which look great but add nothing to the gameplay). There are several options to improve the game, such as inserting lines of rotation and changing regions, but I turned them off for this review. The original car has a choice of levels too, but the portability of the 3DS really helps me revisit this classic.

The first thing that comes to mind when thinking about Sonic the Hedgehog is speed. The 3D gameplay of this franchise is definitely reminiscent of the speed of Sonic and the Green Hill Zone; In the early stages of this game, you will think that the rest of the game will be a speed party, but later levels have real platform puzzles and players are required to slow down and think about what they are doing. The next stages require routine memorization, traps and enemies become more and more sophisticated.

There are 6 levels in the game, each with three actions. At the end of the third act, there is a boss fight with the doctor. Robotnik, who, when defeated, advances to the next level. The game's plot has no real explanation, even though it's simple, so it's easy to get lost in the chaotic emeralds and miss the true ending. When 7 Chaos Emeralds are collected, the game is completely over and the final ending is spectacular. The overall difficulty of the game is in the middle of the era; It's not that hard at any point, but it certainly won't be done in one sitting without serious study of the next few levels. It offers old-school replay value and can be an interesting challenge, but it also means players will get used to the Green Hill zone.

Items scattered throughout the game's levels are useful and include invincibility, anti-speed boots, extra rings, and shields. Although there are not many items, there is something to be said to keep things simple. Objects are sometimes well hidden, and thus exploration in the game is rewarded, as some hidden sections contain items. For a game where the only real controls are moving and jumping, there are a lot of gameplay nuances.

Graphically, the game has a lot of color palettes and themes throughout the levels, but it always manages to look impressive and interesting. The mechanical stages remind me a bit of Donkey Kong Country and I wouldn't be surprised if this Nintendo franchise makes some sort of impact. The soundtrack is fantastic and almost every zone has a catchy and fun theme that adds to the atmosphere and excitement of the levels.

All in all, Sonic The Hedgehog is a great classic platform game that ushered in a period of intense rivalry between Sega and Nintendo. Its 6 zones will take players on a journey and hunt down the always elusive boss, Dr. White. Robotnik with puzzle-platformers that require different thinking and speed to solve. While it can be frustrating to make your way through certain points, and it's clearly meant to be, the first game in the Sonic series has an undeniable appeal. While I'd like to give this game an A, it lacks the story element and the level set could have been a bit larger.
