Game Review: Yakuza Kiwami

Game: Yakuza Kiwami
Console: Sony PlayStation 4
Developer: Sega
Date of publication: August 2017

After announcing Yakuza 0 as the highest rated video game I've ever reviewed on this blog, it only seemed fitting that I take a look at Yakuza Kiwami, the HD version of the original Yakuza for the PS2. The events of Yakuza 0 lead to Yakuza Kiwami's creation and help invest some of the character's struggles after the first prequel. Sharing too many plot details would spoil the game's perfect balance of pacing and tone, but like Yakuza 0, there's plenty of tension, conflicting emotions, and of course, fun storylines.

After 10 years in prison, Kiru Kamurocho returns to 2005 to find that things have changed since the 90s and that he needs her help to control the resurgent Yakuza as he searches for answers to the mystery of the disappearance of 10 trillion yen. . Since Yakuza 0 and Kiwami share the same game engine, the gameplay is almost identical in the two games, and the combat engine is largely unchanged, although the leveling system is now based on experience. more than money

The PS2 version of Yakuza has very poor graphics, fixed camera angles in some parts, loading screens before every battle, and fairly simple translations. Yakuza Kiwami solves all these problems and makes more accurate versions of the games. It's not just an HD remaster, it's a true remake and update, meaning there's almost no point in going back and playing Yakuza again on PS2. The graphics are great, Kiru feels like he's getting used to combat as you improve his skills, and the story is great again.

Overall, if you've played Yakuza 0 and enjoyed the PS2 original, Yakuza Kiwami is worth it. The PS4 version has tons of extra content, the ubiquitous Majima mission, and tons of other features that really improve the game and offer more replayability. While the story isn't as self-contained or epic as Yakuza 0, the author is pretty much limited to the main plot, and the game still has plenty of epic and cinematic moments.

Rating: 89/100
