Master System Month: The Cyber Shinobi

Cyber shinobi game
Console: Sega Master
Developer: Sega
Publication year: 1990

Shinobi's successor (including Alex Kidd from Shinobi World), Cyber Shinobi offers a futuristic twist on the classic Shinobi game. With a combination of archery upgrades and ninjutsu powers to support level progression, players make their way through hordes of bad guys, primarily using melee combat and timed jumps to help maintain and control damage.

The game plays well with simple controls and a clearly defined HUD, even though it takes up almost a third of the screen. While the original Shinobi allowed players to use an unlimited amount of shuriken against the bad guys, all ranged weapons must be collected as rewards, which changes the overall feel of the game a bit. The levels aren't particularly long, and there's a boss at the end of each one, though it doesn't quite fit the overall sinister aesthetic; The first boss is a construction vehicle.

Graphically, the game is quite standard for the Master System, with a limited color palette and small details of sprites. However, the locations and levels are well designed, and the music is well above the typical 8-bit volume. The level of difficulty is high, but not so high that players are encouraged to complete levels only once.

Overall, Cyber Shinobi is a great game of the 1990's that manages to combine fun gameplay, great music, and level design. It's a shame that there are no basic weapons like shuriken to keep up with the original Shinobi's gameplay, but it does add a new strategic element to the way players move through the levels.

Score: 74/100
