Master System Month: Mortal Kombat

Mortal Kombat games
Console: Sega Master System
Developer: Probe Entertainment
Release date: 1993

It's no secret that I don't really like Mortal Kombat as a fighting game. Appreciated more for offense than gameplay, most versions seem to value keystrokes for well-designed attacks, and there's no end to lazy palette changes in lieu of an interesting character roster. Most of the Master System library consists of games that came out on Mega Drive and were passed down as an afterthought over a generation, Mortal Kombat being one of those games.

With only two buttons on the Master System Controller, attacks are limited, although movement of the D-Pad is fairly fluid. Hit tracking is basically random, as your attacks will sometimes damage enemies and sometimes overtake them. Kicks and punches carry no weight and are only performed until one of the combatants falls. The gameplay is boring, like typical Mortal Kombat progression.

Graphically digitized sprites look good in 8-bit mode, the lack of detail almost suits them. The fact that the game has a small roster of 6 playable characters and only 2 stages to complete is very disappointing. Of course, there's plenty of room on the master system cartridge, but the soundtrack sounds almost decent and can easily be called one of the best parts of the game.

Overall, Mortal Kombat was never great in Master System, but even then it was let down by many issues, some of which recur in all versions of the game. Fortunately, this version is slightly better than the Game Boy version, but it can't be any worse either.
