Master System Month: Shadow Of The Beast

Game: Shadow of the Beast
Console: Sega Master System
Developer: Psygnosis
Release date: 1991

Shadow of the Beast is a strange game; Partly because it throws players into an elevated level without any instruction, assuming they turn left, find a key, enter a building and go underground to continue the game, defying the logic of most players, and partly because it looks so different from other traditional system games. Most platformers take place on various levels of elevation, but Shadow of the Beast's introduction is completely flat, giving no indication that the player should be given a key instead of exploring.

Once underground, the game becomes challenging, but a bit more predictable. All collected items can be used through a pause menu, although some potions affect health, so it's best to pay attention. The design of the enemy and the boss is interesting and the player character is also quite different from the classic games, although the explanation for this is more in the manual than in the game itself.

Graphically, the game is impressive, especially in the underground part of the game, but the music is the main audiovisual presentation, with a classic soundtrack in both this version and the 16-bit version of Mega Drive. Psigognosis has always been known for pushing the boundaries of gaming a bit, so it's no surprise that Shadow of the Beast is good, if a little unconventional.

Overall, the game is playable if you know what you're doing, but it can be a bit difficult at times when enemies come in from far away to take your health, and it takes a bit of research and experimentation with the item menu to to get there. at the end of the game there. However, if you want something more challenging than your standard 8-bit game, it's worth a try!
