Master System Month: Xenon 2: Megablast

Game: Xenon 2: Megaburst
Console: Sega Master System
Developer: Bitmap Brothers
Release Date: 1991

While I've never been a huge fan of shooters in the traditional sense, I like to think about what you can say when you're below average. A good shooter is usually a side scroller with fast action, clean maps (except for enemies), good boss design, and a reasonable difficulty level. Xenon 2 decides to remove all these features, leaving a disappointing experience.

First, the game is much slower than traditional shooters, with the screen moving up and down at a crawl. Then there are the rocks and other items that create narrow paths for the player to navigate. Add in the many enemies that can take advantage of these features and you have a poorly designed and slow Master System game.

Visually, the game is quite unoriginal, lacking a unique style, and seemingly using a mix of ideas from other space and horror games. The ship can be upgraded, but they feed on drops and do little to help players progress through levels. Bosses are rigid and poorly designed, taking up too much screen space for players to hide. The music isn't bad, but it's the kind of 8-bit song that would be better if it were reworked in a more modern rock style than the original presentation.

In general, Xenon 2 is pretty forgettable and often tries to reinvent the wheel. As with any shooter, the further you go, the more you'll enjoy the game, but this actively hinders it by design rather than something based on enemy troops or abilities.

Rating: 33/100
Grade: E
