PSP Month: Pursuit Force

Game Pursuit power
Console: Sony PlayStation Portable
Developer: Big Big Studio
Release date: March 7, 2006

Pursuit Force is a unique PSP action game where players take on the role of a special police officer trying to defeat five of the city's most dangerous gangs. There are 6 missions for each faction, for a total of 30 missions, with successive missions unlocked based on their previous rank. The game's missions are mainly about chasing other vehicles by boat, motorcycle or car, jumping from car to car and shooting gang members to incapacitate them.

There isn't much difference between the ship game and the car game, although the controls are slightly different. The game is much more fun in a car than on a boat. The missions drag on a bit as the game progresses, but there are no checkpoints, so failing means starting over. This is a problem because things are pretty hard at first, so in later missions it can be frustrating to say the least. The story behind the missions is also limited to the gameplay and is usually "this gang is attacking someone or something, you have to help".

Graphically, the game isn't bad on the PSP, but it's nowhere near the level of the best console games. The HUD is a bit of a mess with validity counters on the bottom right, vehicle and player health on the bottom left, maps on the top left, captions on the top, objective counters on the top right, and weapon and ammo info. Down. Sides and different orientation symbols on the screen. The voice acting isn't bad and some of the missions have some humor.

Overall, Pursuit Force is pretty much the same, getting harder as the game progresses instead of getting more interesting. It's a great idea for a game, and while the gameplay itself works well, there isn't enough variety to push players past the difficulty walls and not enough story to keep players interested in progressing.
